Opinion on how best to govern the gaming industry is still largely divided across the world. In Europe for example, some member states have looked to enforce restrictive national policies on all legal gaming activity whilst other member states have decided to allow the industry to flourish without as many restrictions on business activity.
In the UK for example, any business entity that wants to provide gaming services must comply with the UK Gambling Commission’s many regulations, which includes 58 information security controls based on the global best practice standard, ISO 27001. The UK Gambling Commission has also introduced a required regulation that any gaming operator must have an annual information security audit carried out.
In addition, if a gaming company wants to process electronic payments from any of their customers, it will also have to comply with the PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards).
As the gaming industry is expanding globally, achieving and maintaining compliance is vastly becoming a more complex task for gaming businesses that need to remain PCI compliant and keep their gaming licenses issued by their respective constitutional body.
